An Ode to Water

This wonderful poem was written by Haritha GB. As a budding engineer and a thiriving poet, Haritha aspires to carve out a niché for the intersection of art and science. She believes that learning more about the world teaches you more about yourself than you could ever know. And that is the reason she strives to make this world a better place, everyday.

“here,

drink some water”
my mom says as she hears me cough.
here,
is a world that runs,
on a single thing: water.
here,
is also a world that pretends,
that we are mightier than what makes us.

we are made of skin and bones that run on water.
skin and bones,
that wouldn’t last a week without water.

but maybe we will never know
why we forget that
conveniently.

sometimes when you brush your teeth with the tap running,
or when you leave the vessel under the tap too long,
or when water tankers break inthe middle of street and spill,
like the ocean.

the ocean: a world of its own.
But she struggles to keep up with our way of life.
we drag her by her neck and wonder why she’s suffocating.

here,
we build lives around convenience,
but never around morality.
here,
when we hear the earth wailing for help
we turn a deaf ear and a blind eye.
we won’t be able to take the whole truth.
here,
we live fast.
pretentiously glamorous,
with an unaltered apathy that will kill us.

here,
what will you do when there is blood in the water?
here,
when there is blood in the water,
there will be regret:
the most useless of all emotions.

and instead,
we start to promise.
and change.
to save the water that brings us together.
water that runs in our veins and in the oceans.
it is not the country that raises you but the land and the water.

here,
in a screeching urgency,
an ode to water.
